E-bills of Lading – what’s happening
Joint RMSC – KVNR – NZS – ICS – NVV seminar
On September 20, in the UK, the The Electronic Trade Document Act 2023 will come into effect. This means that businesses that rely on English law are now legally permitted to exchange bills of lading and other trade documents electronically. This represents the most significant piece of English legislation affecting bills of lading in 30 years. Therefore the RMSC, Royal Association of Netherlands Shipowners, Shipbrokers Associations NZS and ICS and the NVV, Dutch Transport Law Association will organise an in depth knowledge seminar to bring you up to speed.
During this seminar various experts will share their thoughts about possible implications for the shipping and trade industries. Including opportunities for maritime business services providers.
Key functions bills of lading
Bills of lading serve three key functions:
- As a receipt, confirming that the goods have been loaded on board the vessel;
- As evidence of the contract of carriage, between the shipowner and the shipper and/or the lawful holder of the bills;
- As a document of title to the goods.
The possibly upcoming electronic Bills of Lading (eB/Ls) must replicate these functions in order to be viable for use in the shipping and trade industry. During this session, all different angles will be discussed.
